Physical Sciences
Physical sciences is known for being a challenging subject in Grade 12. It demands a strong understanding of scientific terms in context and a solid foundation in math. However, if you enjoy these elements and a good challenge, then Physical Sciences could be the perfect subject for you!
The Physical Sciences syllabus contains two distinct disciplines: physics and chemistry. They are tested through separate exams. While memorisation and definitions are crucial, they only account for 15% of the final examination.
Grade 12 Physical Sciences Content:
- 1.1 Acids & Bases
- 2.1 Definitions
- 3.1 Doppler Effect
- 4.1 Electric Circuits
- 5.1 Electrochemical Cells
- 6.1 Electrodynamics
- 7.1 Electrostatics
- 8.1 Emission & Absorption Spectra
- 9.1 Energy & Change
- 10.1 Equations of Motion
- 11.1 Equilibrium
- 12.1 Momentum & Impulse
- 13.1 Newton's Laws
- 14.1 Organic Chemistry - Intermolecular Forces
- 15.1 Organic Chemistry - Molecules
- 16.1 Organic Chemistry - Reactions
- 17.1 Photoelectric Effect
- 18.1 Quantitative Aspects of Chemical Change
- 19.1 Rates of Reaction
- 20.1 Vertical Projectile Motion
- 21.1 Work, Energy & Power
The Exam
The Physical Sciences exam is divided into two papers; Paper 1 (Physics) and Paper 2 (Chemistry). Each paper is out of 150 marks and is a 3-hour written exam.
- Paper 1 (Physics) examines the following topics: Newton’s laws of motion, vertical Projectile motion, momentum and impulse, work, energy and power, the Doppler effect, electrostatics, electric circuits, electrodynamics, and the photoelectric effect.
- Paper 2 (Chemistry) examines the following topics: organic chemistry, rates of reaction, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, and electrochemical cells.
